Well, all this talk of building a plane, and I haven’t even flown one in… well I’ll keep it vague and say months. Got in the rental ride this afternoon and made my requisite 3 full stop landings to get daytime currency to take passengers up. I promised I’d take my boys of this year, so I need to get the legal requirements out of the way, and then brush the rust of this rust off by making another flight or 2.

The track shown here shows just how rusty I am, too heavy on the right rudder on takeoff, and slightly overshooting final every time. You can see my crab game is weak as well. That’s the point of practice, isn’t it?

I ran into some luck while out there though. On my last approach, I heard an experimental come over the radio inbound right behind me. I slowly taxied back to the hangar to see what it was. Lo and behold it was a Vans RV-7A. Even better, his hangar is 4 down from where I rent. I went down and chatted with him for a few minutes. He and his son built it, and it is a beautiful aircraft. He cemented what I was already thinking as well. Tail wheel and sliding canopy.

That’s all for now. Stay safe out there.

PS) Ignore the part of the log where I turn off my Stratus, and left my iPad on recording the track. It tracked me all the way home…
